This event is being cohosted by the Pendergrass Academy of Martial Arts! In House Tournament Recap!
On Saturday January 23rd we held our first In House tournament of the year. We had a total of 44 participants including 22 little/junior champions and 22 adults/teens. The academy was packed with friends and family watching all the action. And of course we had many of our affiliate/teammates from Rocky Mount in the house representing! The little and junior champions started the day off. For these guys we did a double elimination bracket to ensure everyone got at least a couple of matches. The kids had a great time and learned a bunch about competition. After the kids were done the teens and adults took the mat. The teens also ran through a double elimination bracket insuring they too got at least a couple of matches. On the other side of the mat we had a purple belt match between Alan and Chad. Once they were done the white and blue belts proceeded. For several of the adults this was their very first taste of BJJ competition. We are really proud of all the kids, teens, and adults that came out to play. We can't wait to have our next In House event later in the year. Congrats to our boy Chad Tyler for his TKO win last night (11-21-09) at the Elite Championship Cage Fighting event in Charlotte, NC. The fight was stopped late in the 3rd round due to strikes standing. Chad showed tremendous heart giving up 30 lbs and defeating a guy with a unbeaten record. Big props to our boxing coach Jimmy Adams on getting Chad's hands ready for the fight. It was the boxing that made the difference in this match.

Renato "Charuto" Verissimo
On Thursday October 23rd we had a special guest intructor, Renato "Charuto" Verissimo. Many know Charuto as BJ Penn's jiu jitsu coach, but he himself is a standout jiu jitsu competitor and MMA fighter. Charuto taughter a variety of techniques inlcuding closed guard attacks (cross choke and armbar), as well as, half guard techniques for the bottom and top guy. This was simply a great seminar for everyone that attended. We hope to have Charuto down again in the future to visit and share his brand of jiu jitsu. Below are a few pictures from the seminar.

George Pendergrass Classic, a HUGE Success! Thanks to everyone who came out and supported our cause to raise money for cancer research. The GP Classic Gi tournament saw over 120 competitors step onto the mat, with almost half of those being kids. The growth of the GP Classic would not be possible without the support and commitment from our students, family, and friends who donate their time and sweat to make it all possible. Congratulations to all of our students who competed, as well as, our extended family from Rocky Mount and Wilson that competed as well. Everyone put out great effort and represented us well. This was evident by the fact that the Pendergrass Academy took 2nd place in team point standings.
Quick Update! Unfortunately, we'll have to close the academy down Thursday (13th) and Saturday (15th) to make sure we can move in by Monday (17th). If anyone is willing to come out and help Thursday night or Saturday just contact Guy or Rob. the new address12339 Wake Union Church Rd. Suite 104 Wake Forest, NC 27587.
Move update! Well, things didn't go as smoothly as we were hoping they would with the move. We've talked to the owner and according to him the painters will be working over the weekend to get the space ready. The good news is that we'll be moving in to our new place on Saturday August 15th. This will mean we won't have any classes that day. The first day of class in the new spot will be August 17th. If you have any questions at all please feel free to see or email either Rob or Guy.
Congrats to everyone at Grapplemania NC A huge congrats goes out to everyone that competed at Grapplemania NC this past weekend. We had Lucas and Josue from Wake Forest, Travis and Darnell (and a fairly new student -sorry can't remember his name) from Wilson, and Eric from Rocky Mount competing. The highlights of the day was Josue hitting three flying armbars and Darnell competing in so many matches I literally lost count. Everyone did an awesome job!
Wilson Seminar was a Success! 7-18-09 Thanks to all the Wilson and Rocky Mount students who came out for the seminar. The seminar was 3 hours and concentrated on guard passing concepts and attacks from side mount. Also, congratulation goes out to four new blue belts. Mark and Cliff from Rocky Mount and Bob and Caleb from Wilson.
Pendergrass Academy moving soon! Everything is moving along nicely with the move to our new place. Classes at our new location will begin either on August 3rd or 10th. We will update everyone as we move along and confirm our move in date!
Grapplemania NC The event will be held at Kerr Vance Academy in Henderson, NC. They will be offering divisions for men, women, 30+ men, teenagers, and children. Visit www.usgrappling.us for more information regarding this event.

Martial Arts Community Mourns Loss of Legendary Helio Gracie Helio Gracie, the founding father of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and a legendary figure in the world of Mixed Martial Arts has passed away at the age of 95. Gracie's impact on the sport of Mixed Martial Arts will continue to resonate beyond his years.
Growing up, Helio learned Jiu-Jitsu from his brother Carlos, but his small stature limited his Jiu-Jitsu abilities. Helio did not let this dilute his passion for the Martial Arts, as he adapted Jiu-Jitsu into what is now known as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Gracie will be remembered mainly for his impact on the teachings of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, although the Mixed Martial Arts world will never forget his remarkable pair of matches with Masahiko Kimura, who he lost to in an epic battle, and Valdemar Santana, who he fought for an astonishing 4 hours before coming up short.
The Martial Arts world is bearing a heavy heart after losing such an integral figure in the evolution of Jiu-Jitsu.
Gracie is survived by his wife Vera; his sons Rickson, Royler, Rolker, Royce, Relson, Robin and Rorion; his daughters Rerika and Ricci, as well as numerous siblings, nieces, nephews, and grandchildren.
Helio Gracie, the Martial Arts World will forever be in debt to you and your efforts.

Reminder - Team Training this Saturday (1/26/08)!
Want to remind everyone that team training is this Saturday. Look forward to seeing everyone at 10am!
First we want to wish everyone a safe and prosperous New Year. Before we tell you about the things coming up in the new year let’s highlight 2007.
We have saw great strides in our kid’s program in 2007. We’re really proud of all the kids in our Little Champions program and look forward to seeing this program grow.
We also saw our “extended family” grow with a great group of guys from Wilson (and Rocky Mount). The training facility is located in Wilson and is headed up by Tim Barnes (blue belt) and Eric Griffin (purple belt). Lastly, the academy got a fresh look with it’s website. Some new features have been added to the website for students. I’ll expand on those a little later.
(Wilson/Rocky Mount crew)
For 2008 we are working on several events including the George Pendergrass Classic tournament, Gustavo Machado seminars, and team training.
Tentatively we are planning to have the George Pendergrass Classic tournament in March and September. It’s our goal to announce the exact dates in January once we have secured a venue.
We’ll also confirm dates for seminars with our instructor Gustavo Machado sometime in January. Tentatively we are looking to have him down in February, end of May/first of June, and either end of August or first of October. As many of you have already found out for yourselves Gustavo is a PHENOMENAL instructor. We have been training BJJ for over ten years now and continued to be amazed by his knowledge. Something new we are looking to have this year is a one-hour kid’s portion of the seminar. Gustavo is wonderful with the kids and always brings fun and excitement to the training.
(Gustavo working with his kids in Virginia Beach)
Coming up on Saturday January 26th we will have another Team Training. At the last Team Training we had a great turnout and the training that took place was phenomenal. Team Training will take the place of Open Mat (10-11am).
(Group in attendance at the last team training)
As many of you know the academy has a new look on our website. A couple of notable features include the “Members” and “Ezone” sections. Under the “Members” section there is a “My Curriculum” tab, which will allow everyone access to see their belt level requirements and video clips of techniques. We will be taping these techniques in the next couple of weeks and will let everyone know once they are up and ready. The “Ezone” section has the “eNews” and “eStore” tabs. Under the eNews tabs we will post updated information related to the academy.
The last thing we wanted everyone to know about is the new academy Black Hooded Sweatshirt. The hooded sweatshirt will have the academy name on the front and the logo on the back. As we did with the academy patches we will do a pre-order and have a sheet at the school. The hooded sweatshirts are $25.
We are looking forward to seeing everyone up at the academy and having a great year of training!
